Sound Healing/Cannabis Event in LA…
On April 18, at Liberate Hollywood in Los Angeles, there will be a Cannabis and Sound Healing event. I will be playing Smomid. Many of you might not know that I have been experimenting with binaural beats for several years. I first learned about binaural beats when I was recording an album with Chico Hamilton in 2012. One of the engineers told me about how they work. Since that time I have been creating my own and testing them out on myself. I use them to calm my nerves before a big performance, to relax and cure anxiety. I have shared my recordings with a few close friends. At this event I will be playing some binaural beats in addition to many other soothing sounds. Also, the sound healer who organized this event, Rachel Dugas, has a lot of amazing singing bowls, tuning forks and other instruments that really do have an affect on the body.
Also, I have noticed that when under the influence of Cannabis, I start to notice different things when listening to sound. I start to hear more that I have never noticed before. I will also say that after every rehearsal that Rachel and i have done I feel very calm, focused and relaxed. Sound really does have an affect on me. I hope some of you can join us at this event.
If you would like to research this on your own look up some binaural beats and try them out. There is a lot of terrible and inaccurate information on the internet regarding binaural beats so it is best to experiment and try different one’s out. If you have software like Pure Data or Max MSP then I would highly recommend creating your own. I also recently discovered Isochronic tones, which are similar to binaural beats, but you don’t need to have a stereo listening experience, and can be heard with a mono or stereo speaker setup.
Also, highly recommended: Andy Farnell’s book designing sound. In the first few chapters he describes how sound works, what sound is, and how human ears work. Reading this book has changed my life and the way I experience the world. If you can get it, READ IT!!
Here’s the link to the event, it can also be found on the Smomid Facebook page:
